I was just called today from these same people. I got a call first on my cell from a "Private Number", when answered, this lady told me that a collection agency had been trying to reach me and this was the final attempt. She gave me the number to PNC Capital Group with an account number. When I called the lady was talking very fast and said I had taken out a loan back in 2008 first, then she said it was taken out back in 1997 and payments had been made until January of 2010. Every time I tried to ask her a question she would cut me off and after trying again with a raised voice she said she would not be yelled at and hung up on me. I called back numerous times and kept getting very little bits of information from her. She said she was going to have papers served on me at my job as well. I NEVER took out a loan in 1997 or in 2008, as a matter of fact I couldn't have taken out a loan for a piece of gum in either year because of student loans. (Which are current by the way, and nothing is showing in the negative on my credit report). I think this is all a scam because she said to me that unless I was willing to set payment arrangements up, there was nothing else she would discuss with me.
I got a message stating they were going to serve me papers regarding a claim against me on Thursday an if I didn't want that to happen I would need to call the number and make arrangements to have the papers served to my home. They new my address but did not name my place of work so that was my red flag. I wonder if they move around by territory and if I should call my local sheriffs dept to give a heads up. I also feel like calling them and playing along just to see what their scam is. Seems like if I play along I'd get more info to report to the authorities.
Its a scam and fake, no nothing happened. Its a extortion scam..

I got a call from them too and they threatened to file a civil complaint and serve me papers if I don't pay..they won't provide me with proof that they own the debt. All they said was that they have a bill of sale that they will show in court....guess I'll have to wait and see .
A bill of sale does NOT equate to proof that you owe the debt to them. They're blowing smoke, trying to scare you. Per the FDCPA, you should NOT pay any caller who refuses to MAIL a debt validation letter showing you owe this debt and that they can legally collect said debt. Please do report them to the FTC, FBI and your state's Attorney General. Also read Tamianth's post above - lots of information on this scam.
