Well, first of all, the IRS does NOT inform you of anything by phone, it is always by mail. Got thsis phone call/recording on my landline (first clue it was a telemarketer/scam call). Did not call back. Also, the area code is nowhere near where I live.
The IRS will not call anyone. They will send out many letters. Then if you do not respond they will go to your work first. I am a tax preparer and know this first hand.
Received numerous calls pretending to be the IRS regarding owning passed taxes from 6 years ago.
They demanded for me to leave my work and go an specific address to pay my debt to the IRS via money order.
I told them that they were a scam and got very angry. I was told not to hung up the phone or else there will be terrible consequences.
I called my accountant immediately and was told that they have received numerous complaints regarding these scams and block and disregard the number. They call from all over the country. Do not be intimidated and report them to the local police.
