I've received two calls from a company I later learned was "WPI Group, Inc.". They asked several questions about what kind of computer I was using and, on on occasion, told my wife that they were from Microsoft and out computer was transmitting malicious software. They wanted me to sit in front of my computer and give them information. My wife refused and the caller became confrontational. I played along before hanging up on them. He called immediately back and I told them we'd been disconnected. I asked for a number to call him back and he gave me 646.915.0427. It is registered to WPI Group. I did some Internet research and learned this is probably a call center or some telemarketing scam.

No, these are criminals and not telemarketers. They're not Microsoft and Microsoft *wouldn't* know your PC's transmitting malware because your PC is *not* sending any info on itself to Microsoft. They are criminals. They'll ask you to launch Event Viewer in your PC to show you all the errors your PC has. It's *normal* for errors to be logged even in a perfectly healthy PC. Something simple like trying to connect to the net and the cable's not attach will generate an error in the log - a perfectly harmless error. They will send you to a website and download software that will allow them to remotely control your PC. Once they're in control, anything can happen. They can install fake antivirus that finds lots of viruses on your PC that you'll have to pay $$$ to remove. They can plant malware that will steal your banking data. Do not do anything they tell you to do. Report to the Internet Crime Complaint Center http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx , the Federal Communications Commission http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm , the Federal Trade Commission https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ and your state AG. Buy a whistle or air horn and use it, God will forgive.

*NEVER* LET ANYONE CONTROL YOUR COMPUTER REMOTELY. IF YOU HAVE COMPUTER PROBLEMS, TAKE IT TO A LOCAL SHOP.

I just received a call from some one who claimed to be Leon Marquez in Salt lake City.  He said he worked for Microsoft and he was calling because my computer has something on it.  I forgot the word he used but it was obvious to me that English is his second language.  and English technology terms are his 3rd language. He told me that if I would go to my computer he would instruct me in how to remove the thing.  Sorry I forgot his termonology but he did not say virus or malware or anything of that sort.  I told him that I do not have a phone that I can pick up next to my computer and I would have to call him back.
I also told him it would take me several minutes.
He agreed to have me call him back and gave me the number 1-646-9150-427
putting the break in the wrong place.  (old telco personel here,)
I told him I also do not answer the phone with a pencil and paper in my hand and had him repeat the number.  I am marking this as unknown,  UI beleive it is a scam.

We just got a call today from this group today and gave me 614 9150 427 and then 646 915 0427. Unfortunately we had given remote access before realizing it was bogus. So far the PC is fine but now I am concerned about shutting down and later booting up. The fun we get to have!
