they called me, same thing, IRS... I asked "why did I not get a certified letter?" They said, they sent it and asked me why I didn't respond. I asked them 'what address did you send it to?" They gave me an address, but it is not an address I have ever lived at!! Total bunch of B.S., IRS will NOT call you, they will send you a letter!!
Called my work number & recording stated they are the IRS & to call them at that number. There was a report on the national news last week saying how these calls are exploding right now. Are that many people falling for this scam? It makes me angry when I think about them ripping off seniors who may have dementia.
A man with an Indian or Middle Eastern accent called saying they were from the IRS. They said I had made some errors on past tax filings and I needed to pay the missing amount or their attorneys would be filing a lawsuit against me and having the police arrest me.
I went to Walgreens or Rite-Aid as they requested and purchased 5 Apple iTunes gift cards. 1 for $500 and 4 for $100 each.
Well the bad news is that you were just scammed, you are out $900 dollars, the IRS had nothing to do with this, and you just made some scum in India a whole lot richer. The even worse news is that now they have you down on their easy marks list. A simple web search before you paid them would have been prudent.
IRS Scam:
The IRS does not need to sue anyone. They send you first class letters delivered by the Post Office. Several of them. Ignore those, and they then send certified letters that you need to sign for. Again delivered by the Post Office. Ignore those and they simply freeze your bank accounts and anything else you own. If they can do that, then why would they bother with a court case that might take them years before they get in front of a judge? They also do not bother arresting people for a few thousand dollars for the same reasons I have already given.
