Caller was supposedly calling on behalf of our local paper. "Toy" said calling was being recorded for quality purposes. Wanted my credit card # to bring my account up to date (I had made subscription changes and was waiting for the final bill). Didn't feel comfortable giving my CC over the phone to someone who called me and told her I'd remit payment today via my account on paper's website. She offered a $10 Walmart giftcard, and had all of my account info. Got call from representative saying they were calling from ADT and had I selected a security company. They called me by name. I said thank you, but I'm not interested in your services. She said thank you and ended the call.
I used *69 to find out who had called. Tried the number and it rang and rang. Looked it up online and found this forum.
My local newspaper screwed up billing my credit card for my subscription. They billed me Oct 2, which shows on my CC statement as paid for the month of October and stopped delivery of my paper Oct 15. On Nov 2, I started getting calls from the 704 number. Several times a day and late at night, no message ever left. I finally picked up on Nov 3 when they called. It was Ben from Universal Circulation telling me my CC wasn't accepted and the paper shut down my paper delivery. He asked for my CC info and offered me a deal, $11 per month versus the $14 per month I was paying. My local paper shared my private information including my phone number with a 3rd party. I'm calling the Boulder paper tomorrow and raising hell. It was apparent that Ben was getting some commission if I renewed my subscription that should have never lapsed.
