Incoming call said it was from a payphone. I knew 714 was orange county. I didn't answer and they didn't leave a message. I know scammers can make the caller I'd look like it's from someone else. I blocked my call and called back it rang and rang until it stopped ringing. No one answered but then I heard a loud pitch like I was dialing a fax #. It certaintly not a payphone. This is an ID thieft ring. Beware
I usually do not answer these long distance, unknown numbers because they are a waste of time, but today I felt like turning the tables on these people, so I did.
A man with a heavy Indian/Pakistani (?) accent called from "Windows" because I was supposedly having an issue with my computer. I just played along, nonchalantly, saying "yes" and "ok" without giving out any kind of personal information. He seemed surprised that I was not hesitating or refusing his comments, so he would pause and then keep going until he asked me to turn on my computer.
That is when I asked him if once I turned it on, I should look up scam artists and how to stop them from bothering innocent people or if he just expected me to give him all my information. He was stunned! He said that they could not scam over the phone which is when I confronted him about being from Windows customer service. I asked if he had my name, which he did not, so how could he be calling about my service without my registered name? I threatened to call the police.
He hung up pretty quickly! LOL ;-)
It is too bad that nothing can be done about these harassing calls!
