Thank you,I did take the advice above and filed a complaint. The funny thing is that they called back today from a different number (303.265.5762) with the same script. Every time they call I will file a new complaint. I figure sooner or later they will either stop calling me, or the state will take action. Either are acceptable outcomes for me.
I recently received several phone calls from these scammers. They claimed that this was an urgent legal matter.I called back within minutes of their call.I got a voice mail that said "Please leave your name and number. Your phone call will be returned.Really? Such an urgent matter and nobody was available to speak to me? When I finally did reach them, they were very nasty. I was very put off and went off on them . When I asked them who are you and why are you calling me they actually told me that they were not obligated to tell me the company name.I called them back a few more times and they hung up on me all 3 times.I was told at 1 point that it was in regards to a payday loan.Never took out any kind of a loan like that.Wouldn't even have a clue how to do it. I reported them to the state police. My bank told me to report this threat that they made to me to all 3 credit beaureaus so they can flag your account so that if they do try to do anything, they will be aware that it is potentially fraudulent. Also notify Social Security just to make sure that no one has been using your # fraudulently
Some crazy scamming operation. It has a history on 800notes. Somebody always calls saying they from district ( or division) 217 and start their debt scamming at that point. No idea where they are located. Usually they say you’re being charged with some sort of serious crime. Total clap-trap.
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening arrest or criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a clear violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act)
Also contact your local attorney general
If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion. You might have to yell at the scammer and talk over him or her. Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved. Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now. If you can find them.
See my note from June 10. There is a link to the Colorado AG office who is currently investigating these people. We need to all file complaints so they know how much these criminals are trying to scam people. BTW - sure you know this, but they ARE obligated to tell you the company name of the creditor! They can't tell you who it is because there isn't one.
