Bill collectors for very old cell phone bills. They're just hoping we're dumb enough to be afraid of "legal action". Next time they call, tell them you've notified your attorney because they've violated the Statutes of Limitations!
The Statute of Limitations does not mean what you seem to think it means. It is not something that can be violated. In the case of criminal acts, it sets the maximum time after which the State can no longer prosecute the alleged criminal. In the case of civil torts such as defaulted debt, it sets the maximum time after which the debtor can no longer be sued to collect the debt. It does not, however, prevent a debt holder from attempting to collect, only the ability to sue to collect has been lost. As always, check your state's legal code for the exact details and consult a consumer attorney if you need legal assistance with debt collectors.
Got a call from this number looking for someone I actually know of, but there is no way that my name or phone number could be connected to this person. We are not now and never have been friends or relatives, have never lived near each other and have no friends or acquaintances in common that I know of. Very strange and a bit unnerving since the person they asked about is one very scary dude! Kinda freaks me out!
They said they had received numerous complaints about this person and they wanted to bring charges without him knowing about it. I told them to check the State Prisons if they wanted to find him and hung up.
Any ideas how to get off these people's call list? Any ideas how and why they could have mistakenly connected my name and number to this scary dude?
