I got a call from a David Williams from Dispute Resolution Center asking about a legal matter. His number is (786) 275-5073. There was a lot of background noises, and he did not speak English very well. When I asked him if it was a scam, he replied, "No, you are a scam." I informed him, "You are scam. I am going to report you to the authorities. Okay, bye." I hung up. I wish the United States had way to stop these types of scams and protect people.
THIS IS AN EXTORTION SCAM. Scammers use bought/hacked loan application data to extort payments for fictitious debts from victims and victims' families and friends.
The FBI warns about payday loan extortion scams here http://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/paydayloanscam_120710
The BBB has issued several alerts on this scam, just google "bbb.org alert phony debt collector"
Report to the Internet Crime Complaint Center http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx , the Federal Communications Commission http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm , the Federal Trade Commission https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ and your state AG, as appropriate.
Got a call. Same as above...Robert Brown...my soc sec is under investigation. Forwarding the voicemail they left to the DA's office and state police....
Update: Called number back.... S/W a Brian. Broken English. Became very dodgy when I started asking questions and then hung up when he head my police scanner in the background. I called the number back, got Brian again. He heard the police scanner in the background and hung up yet again. Called back and my number was blocked. After a quick *67, I get the same person. He now has me on hold while he "gets my paperwork"....
Came back, stated that the call was being recorded by the federal government. After I chuckled hysterically, I called him on his bluff.... He said the issue will go to court, even though he does not have my SSN, address, last name, etc.
I've lodged complaints against these guys calling from a different number. Nothing is going to happen so instead I have chosen to continually tie up their line with bogus return calls. It's a riot how frustrated they get - best part is that people they are hoping to scam can't get through when I am on the line or they leave it off the hook so they don't have to deal with me. They really can't do anything to you as long as you do not provide them with any information. Just don't pretend to be a cop as that is illegal. Most fun I have had in a long time. The number I am thwarting is 281-220-8454.
