I received a call from this number and also got the recorded message. I then looked up the number and saw this page with all of your comments on it (so thank you all for taking the time to comment and let people know!) afterwards I called the number back and it rang and rang with no answer. Then about an hour later he called me back. I ignored the phone call that time and he left no message but called me back two more times before I finally decided to answer and give him a piece of my mind. When I answered he said "hello, I received a call from this number" (the man sounded middle eastern) I then said "yes, I received a call from this number first and I was returning the call" (I did not mention the recorded message at all). The he proceeded with his scam saying his name was Mike Davis and he was a lawyer for the IRS and there were serious allegations against me and my SSN was being investigated. I cut him off at this point and I said "I have already contacted the IRS and there are no allegations or investigations on me so I know this is a scam" and he said "ok I won't waste anymore of your time I have more people to call and scam" he actually said that to me! Oh how I wish I had recorded that phone conversation!! I told him what he was doing is wrong and he said that this was his job and he had to do it to make money to support his family. I said "this isn't a job it's a crime!" And he then asked what I would recommend him do for money to support his family because he couldn't get a legal job that pays enough to support them. He said "what should I go beg on the street?" I said well at least that would be HONEST! He tried to say he is hurting anyone and that he is just "asking" for $500-$1000 from people which anyone can afford to live without... And that he isn't holding a gun to anyone's head forcing them to pay him... He really tried to justify what he was doing and tried to make me feel bad for him... I told him that he is hurting people and that people like him target older people who are unaware of scammers and trusting. He then tried to tell me that he doesn't target old people and that if an older sounding person answers the phone he will not follow through with it and instead tell them that it was a scam phone call and warn them of other scammers out there. I called him out on that and said that I didn't believe that for a second. Anyway we had a long conversation going back and forth where I told him how wrong he was for scanning people and he tried to justify his behavior. So I just ended the call I said "You tell yourself whatever you have to in order to sleep at night but what you are doing is wrong and illegal and I hope you get arrested. And you need Jesus!!" Then I hung up on him! I don't think I'll be hearing from him again anytime soon, hopefully not ever!!
I knew it had tobe a scam of some kind... IRS agents would have better grammar than this putz... If you can't talk the talk, you shouldn't be committing this type of fraud, dummy!
Well, for one thing, they are located in India and Pakistan. Secondly they are beyond the reach of US law. Thirdly, the local governments do little if anything to close down the scamming call centers, Lastly, even if you could find out who called you, what could you do about it? I'll tell you: Nothing. It's unlikely either the Indian or Pakistani governments would allow an extradition to the US.
Call blocker is your best bet and do not pick up on calls you do not recognize.
I use a variation of what you said. I assume they are Hindu (but not very pious) and tell them that the great God Yama, Lord of Death and Judge of Men will judge the caller after he dies. I tell them that they will stand before Yama --and what will he say then?
I tell them that the Yamarajah knows all. At that point they generally start cussing me out in Hindi, so I tell them that they can cuss all they want, the Yamarajah hears every word and knows all. I tell them that the divine Vedas do not lie.
Sometimes I threaten to pray to Yama that he will bring down a curse upon them while they are still alive. But later on I soften things up by saying I will pray to Ganesh, Lord of Wisdom and Knowledge that Ganesh will give him the enlightenment to live rightly.
