Since this is very likely a scammer who is calling, pressing ANYthing on your phone will most likely do the opposite of what you say. Doing so validates your phone number as "live" and available to be sold to or shared with other scammers.
Don't trust anyone who cold calls you. How do you know who you're talking to? Would you give a stranger on the street any information? Most likely not, and certainly not a donation to an alleged cause.
Have received numerous and repeated calls from 786-646-0077 on my Caller ID, but for the first time on April 8th, in the evening, I actually answered the phone (not knowing who was behind that number).
The female caller asked for me by first name, and when I asked who was calling, she said some sort of organization that is collecting money for "ladies fighting breast cancer." She asked me if I would like to "help the ladies" with a donation [whoever "the ladies" are and if they even exist]. I said no, because this might very well be a scam, and I also receive TONS of solicitations in the mail and half of them are probably scams - and the only charity I trust is the Salvation Army.
The caller quickly said she understood and appeared to immediately try to get off the phone. I said I support the cause (fighting/curing breast cancer) in sentiment, but that this is probably a scam. I said, "If it is a scam, then shame on you, because I don't know."
...And I hung up the phone.
NOTE: I tried calling that same number today and all it is, is a recording saying exactly the following:
"Thank you for calling the fundraising center. We are unable to take your call at this time."
The fundraising center??? If they were a legitimate charity, they would probably have a live person answering the phone, and at the very least - if only a recording - then there'd be an *organization name* identifying them, not just a "fundraising center," as they so generically called themselves. I suspect they telephone countless people and make up whatever fake charity suits them in order to solicit funds from unsuspecting people. I'm going to report them to the proper authorities for possible fraud.
I got a call from this number, as well - I didn't answer and they didn't leave a message. Wish somebody would shut these so-called "boiler room operations" down.
Got the same call on Sunday 4/26/2015 On NDNC List and they still called. Bothers me they ask by first name so they have researched more than the phone book to do this. Get a service added to your phone to block all solicitors as some providers have. I am now adding it at a cost of 9 bucks and it will be worth screening all calls first before ringing in.
Welcome to one of the unfortunate loopholes in the DNCR. My problem with charities not being part of the DNCR is that it can leave the door open to allow people to setup bogus organizations. A prime example are fake police organizations seeking donations.
