Called 6:00 on a sunday night. Left message on the machine because they thought someone had picked up. Couldn't understand some of the message but they said something like "Hello this is so and so calling from so and so associates and I would like to speak to a registered voter...... Anyone on the line?"
And they hung up.

I do not feel sorry for people who take telemarketering jobs. They know that it is an infringment of people's right to be free of those calls. If someone calls you claiming that they are with such and such law inforcement organization, asking for donations, you can bet the caller is NOT a member of the organization. They ofter receive as much as 75% of whatever you send the organization.
When a crazy number shows up on your caller ID, a good trick is to say "Police Department. If you have an emergency hang up and call 911". If it is a live person, they will hang up right away. Of course, if it is a recorded message, all you can do is hang up.
As soon as you answer, you can hit the 0 (Opr) button on your phone several time. I have done that and a voice said "your number has been removed". That may or may not be true but it is a good try.
