Received a call from Deputy Turner from LA county sheriffs dept. asking for my boss. Let him know he wasn't available. Someone different called back a second time from the same number saying one of his deputies left a message already and they really needed to contact my boss. They kept telling me to call the office at the above number. It comes up as a cell phone which is what made me suspicious in the first place, that and they wouldn't call his work for a personal matter. Had a third call from a third person on an Ohio cell (513-218-7115) letting me know if they don't speak with my boss they would be issuing a warrant. Asked him why his phone comes up as an Ohio cell number that's attached to scams if he's calling from the LA sheriff's dept? He got mad and I hung up. Now I'm calling the real LA police dept.
This is a new version of debt scamming. The idea is to get a fast pay-off by frightening people with "forgotten" jury duty. It is popular in parts of the Southeast right now. The crooks are not looking for big money, $50 or $100 is fine if they can get it with one phone call.
Received call from some guy pretending to be from a law office and needing to speak to me urgently about a final notice for a citation. He called from 818-201-9342.
