Two kids came to my door tonight.  I talked with them for 10 minutes or more, explaining why I couldn't buy from them and looking very carefully at all their information.  They possessed a colorful sheet- quite handled- of magazine subscriptions for Millennium and then some typed up lists of books titles.  The titles were separated into hand-written categories: They included, "books, "bibles, "dictionaries."  They introduced themselves as trying to learn public speaking skills to help them get into college.  One boy told me he was trying to get into "Virginia Tech," which is an odd school for this area and, interestingly, where my husband went to school- as is stated on his license plate on his car, in the driveway.  They were very nice boys.  I told them I am an English teacher  and that I wanted to believe them but that I simply couldn't trust door to door, in the dark, sales.  I asked if there was anything I could take with me to purchase later, but they said then they wouldn't get the "points" to win money for college.  One boy claimed to be from Detroit and added a daughter he is supporting.  The kids were nice, well mannered, and even funny.  I wanted to believe them.  I think kids sometimes feel like they have to do illegal things to survive or to get money.  I feel bad for them.  I did report them to my local police as I worried they were scoping out the house.  I actually feel bad doing it.

Our stories all sound the same.  We were duped into believing that we were helping kids who needed our help.  Too bad a company has exploited both the kids and our good intentions.  Heard the same story as others from two African girls who claimed to be students.  Gave them an order for 2 overpriced books,  although the whole scene seemed  "uncomfortable"...at night and in a neighborhood that says "no solicitating"  After they left,  I had  a  feeling that I had been a sucker, and found this site that confirmed that feeling!  The next day I sent the cancellation request by registered mail---requiring a signature.  I have since  received  my checks  and  copy of the order.  What a relief !   Thanks for all of your comments.

I also got screwed from this people thinking I was helping her to go to college.  Im so glad I only gave them $24.00 cash and now they are sending me $36.00 bill.  I tried calling the phone number, but it's not in service.  Where do we report this?

Thanks for posting this listofscams.blogspot.com/2010/01/door-to-door-magazine-sales-scams-tips.html to check if they could do any more damage.  I was so scared, but now I'm thankful because I only gave them cash.
