Your experience is interesting. I looked up Clear Check's phone number and their listed number is different from the number that appeared on my handy but still from Greenville NC.
For now will assume fraud but will watch the mail.
They called me, even asked about where they could PHYSICALLY locate me! I also got a letter a few weeks earlier from a Branch of Check Systems. They said my personal information had been stolen by a emplyee working against the privacy policy they have. That information had apparently been sold to data brokers! What the hell is that [***]. So basically my identity was already stolen. Anyways these people are rude, anyone else recieve a letter about stolen identity?
I just went round and round with a RUDE B*@CH - same thing... I wonder if my information was stolen too? First, when she answered the phone, she just said "hello"... first clue somthing was up. I asked to speak with Ed Taylor - who was conveniently away from his desk. She had information about a returned check I wrote to Safeway - the amount I owed, etc. She refused to tell me who the company was and also refused to send me a statement. She demanded my credit card info and threatened to sue and contact the local authorities to have me arrested if I didn't pay immediately. I was so mad I hung up. Then surfed the net and found the posting about the Check Systems breech and info being sold by an employee to data brokers. I ended up calling Safeway directly who put me in touch with their ONLY collection company, Clear Check, who was very polite... and answered the phone like you would expect... "Clear Check, how may I direct your call?". I wend ahead and paid them directly - and told them about the fake company who called me. I'm now planning to call Check Systems directly and scream at them - I didn't recieve a letter about my identity being stolen, which, it seems, it was.

Clear Check is a collection agency used by Safeway and others to collect on bad checks written at their locations. They are located in Greenville N.C. their phone number is correct but it is one of many. They are quite rude and in violation of many laws. I have a child with cancer and they say we owe them like $400. So I agreed to pay them $120 that we could and then payments, thinking they were on the up and up. Well they took the payment and then the next day and every day since have called us at 7am and every few hours after that. They claim no knollege of the agreement to pay although they agknollege payment recieved. These are the type of people who cause real harm in our society. How do you think my woman feels, she wrote the check to cover stuff we needed for the boy, I mean shoot he has cancer we needed nausua med and snacks and stuff for him. Now these people will not act in good faith. I know no one will ever see this or even care to act on it, but truly these people are parasites on humanity as a whole.
