It's obviously a scam. I hesitate to call the number back in case it's one of those $5 a minute phone calls, but since it's a New Jersey phone number, maybe I'll just do it anyway. My boyfriend is an ex-intelligence army from the military and he also loves playing practical jokes. I'll put him on this and he'll have fun messing with them!
I received a call from this number this morning. I didn't answer the first time and received a message from "Steve Martin" telling me to call. The name on my call messaging system was not Steve Martin. I called and was told that legal action was imminent and that they could help me avoid it. I refused to talk with the guy, who had a strong accent, any further. He threatened to send out an investigating officer. I tried calling the IRS but they were too busy to help me. I called the number "Steve Martin" had given me again to ask for details so I could report them to the IRS if I got through to them. This time, the same guy told me his name was Patrick Johnson and that he worked for the US Treasury Department. He said his ID number was 503w03. He told me he had sent the investigating officer already so there was nothing further he could do. The officer was supposed to arrive in 20-25 minutes. So far, he hasn't been here.
