Got a call 'informing me of a cancellation on my verizon account' and that it 'should be back to normal.' I played along and agreed, and they hung up. Guess I didn't give him a reason to ask for any personal information since all I said was 'okay.'
They spoof the phone number. It's not their phone number and apparently not an in service number. This is typical of scammers to spoof their number because if they can get someone to give up their personal information, they don't want you to call them back. This is why we need legislation to ban phone number spoofing with hefty fines and jail time, not the simple slap-on-the-wrist for the do-not-call list which is now a farce! I feel it's a form of identity thief, especially when I get calls to my phone and the calling number comes up as my own phone number. That number is assigned to me and should *not* be used by anyone else.
Yes you are right, perhaps it could be modeled after this Truth in Caller ID act from 2009: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/PLAW-111publ331/pdf/PLAW-111publ331.pdf
I am sure that the criminals will obey it once it is enacted, oh wait it was in 2009, darn those criminals.
It was a legitimate tech assistance. They called back after bouncing me to three different techs over the course of 90 minutes. When I hung up they called back and I said they were useless and intentionally evading and putting me on hold to avoid resolution of the situation. Verizon Wireless has horrible customer service and intentionally uses a series of calling responses to make the person with the complaint get frustrated and give up on their possibility of resolution. I have filed a complaint with the better business bureau, not that it will help.
