These people are the biggest lowlife [***] on the planet. They have been calling me for 5 yrs regarding a debt I never owed. I called the original creditor 5 yrs ago and they told me they had no record I owed them anything. Thank God for my Call Blocker that hangs up on them after one ring. I can not send them a cease and desist letter since they do not send me anything in the mail regarding the debt. If they ever send me something in writing, I am going to sue them for extreme harassment.
Actually BigA,,,, most of the time you don't have to go to that extent. If you are lucky enough to get their fax number, at times that will be sufficient. Simply write a letter telling them that you are exercising your Federal Rights under "Public Laws 95-109 and 99361, also know as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act" and that you will pay the original creditor and for them to never call or contact again. Most of the time,, they accept it.
I have had several argue with me and said that I couldn't pay the original creditor and that the original creditor would not accept the payment. I told them then that would make me so very happy because of the original creditor refuses payment then that absolves me of having to pay the debt.
One did tell me that they would continue to call me until I did pay them. I told them that I would be more than happy for that to happen and I would be more than happy to file it in civil court. They didn't believe me. But once they got the court papers to appear in court they did stop calling. And no they didn't show up in court. Automatic default judgment against them.
Bill collectors that want to be obnoxious and belligerent? I'm their worse nightmare.
So you advocate paying bills that you don't owe? Tell me how do you prove that they got that "faxed letter" in court? If the original creditor legally sold the debt and the contract allows the transfer, then what you said "I told them then that would make me so very happy because of the original creditor refuses payment then that absolves me of having to pay the debt." is false and misleading.
I suspect you are not quite as "wise" as you claim to be.

Portfolio Recovery, using yet another variation of their millions of numbers to call and hound about my deceased mother's debts. They have been sent a copy of her death certificate and informed that there is nothing in the estate to "get", and they said they'd remove my number from the list - yet they persist in calling on a daily basis, using different numbers each time.
I don't even answer anymore. Mom's been gone for a year. I just keep blocking their numbers and ignoring them. If they want to pursue collection from a dead person, they're welcome to try. Idiots.
