The calls come from the Portland, OR area from a boiler room operation selling either CC or security systems. If you are a smartphone user your service provider should be able to set up a blocking password for you. You will need to know how to access the blocking feature on your particular phone. Usually under the 'Help' section. There are two numbers to block for these calls: 1-971-220-1761 (Portland, OR area #) and 1-253-246-8514 (a Seattle, WA area #).
Reporting them to the DNC registry, while not providing any fast relief, is still a good idea as if enough of us report these boiler rooms it may have an impact down the road. By not doing so it allows these people to continue and expand their operations.
Technology these days allows these boiler room operations to utilize an automatic dialer that goes sequentially through ten digit numbers. That means even those with unlisted numbers will get calls. All the more reason to at least register a complaint. I've done so both through the DNS registry and through the OR Attorney General's office. Today is the first time I had a call utilizing a WA # so will also file a complaint there.
One additional caveat. Several responders here noted the accent of some of the callers. This could be, and likely is, because they are calling from offshore. While it complicates any type of enforcement action, it nonetheless builds a case for some action down the road if enough people complain about it.
It's been a few years but I worked on telecommunications policy for our state. These 'junk' calls were a vexing problem then which is why we strongly supported establishing the DNC registry. Technology has evolved greatly in the last 20+ years. Time to review the DNC registry policies and update them to significantly slow down these 'junk' calls.
If you have thoughts or suggestions I am leaving an email address here
[email protected]. It is a temporary one so if the spammers find it that email address will go away and I will replace it here. If there is enough interest in this subject I may set up a website to deal with it. Regards, Mike
