Just received same phone call from "Happy Software" in Brooklyn. Asked for his address, wouldn't give it to me. Asked for his phone #, wouldn't give it to me. Asked to speak to his supervisor, said he couldn't do that. Then he told me to have a nice day.
A man with a heavy East Indian accent, calling himself Max and claiming to be with Microsoft, called me on October 27, 2010 saying that Microsoft had been getting "error messages" from my computer and that my computer could crash at any second. He wanted to lead me through a series of keys presses on my computer in order to "fix the problem." I was quite suspicious, asked him to just give me the instructions and told him I'd do it later. He became annoyed, told me I'd have to stay on the phone with him and follow his directions step-by-step. I asked for him name and number and told him I'd call him back. He gave me the name Max and the number 718/593-4198, which I doubted was a real number. I recognized it as a scam but wanted to get as much information as possible from him. Undoubtedly, he was trying to take control of my computer remotely and get personal information. I later Googled "calls from Microsoft," discovered that Microsoft never makes such calls, and came upon a wealth of information confirming my suspicion that this is a scam. Apparently, many people in numerous countries have been getting these calls.
718-593-4198 is a number that is in use by "Level 3 Communications" in New York City.
I received at least 4 calls, that was unlisted. I asked for details, and received that number too. This is a real business, but the calls, I am not so sure. The Asian sounding man wanted me to do the same stuff up there. I would not. He gave up after I demanded the phone number.
