Same heavy east indian accented woman called my wife today. She could hardly understand her, but she asked about our Windows computer.... The big laugh, we have a Mac! They are up to something....
I've been called me three times, each caller has had a thick accent, a very "american" name, and background noise which sounds like a boiler room (you can hear a good amount of people talking). The first time, I hung up. The second time, I played with the poor chap (couldn't understand a word he said). The third time, I called over to my tech guy and said, this person on the phone says I have a problem with my computer, my tech guy said "hang up". I think we're finally going to get around to blocking the number.
Phone rings...caller ID says Beaverton, Oregon. I answer. Right away an eastern Indian woman start turbo talking, as if she only has 40 seconds to tell me of the greatest of emergencies. I say, "What do you want"? She say's, in a impatient tone, "Mam, I don't want anything". "We have been notified to contact all Windows', computer users". "90,000 computers have already crashed, and we must help to to make sure your computer does not get this". I say, "Are you saying there is a virus"? She says, "No, it is not a virus, it is an 'infection". I ask her who she is with. She says she is with Tech support. I ask "what is the name of the company"? She tells me it is called, "My tech support", located in Salt lake city". Now remember the caller ID says Beaverton. She want me to sit at the computer, and she will tell me step by step what to do and where to go. I tell her I am not going to go on the computer, and I will have my son in law look into this. She says she will call back. We are already on the, "Do not call list". So I have to look into my rights. Don't do what they say!
I do not know about others, but on my machine that "{888DCA60-FC0A-11CF-8F0F-00C04FD7D062}" is the Registry ID for a compressed folder that I used once to send some files to a client.
The 971-217-9508 phone number has called here several times, I have not answreed and has left no message.
Caller ID showed the same number but it was company trying to sell exclusive online Medicare leads. Phone number must be for an automated dialer for a telemarketing company out of Oregon. They must have contracts with several companies to market for them-- whom may or may NOT be legitimate.
Beware and ask several questions. In addition, ask about the telemarketing company in Oregon. They should be notified that several unsavory companies are using their services.
