I put out an ad for baby sitting on craigslist and some lady named Brenda asked for my name and number. She emailed me back with the scam details saying I would take care of her daughter who is new to the country I would need to give them my ssn and other personal iinformation. I knew it was a scam so I didn't. But that number called me today, I didn't answer.
I think the number itself is a long distance calling card service. Of course, the people that use the card are often scammers (as indicated in the comments above). Therefore that many different company names.
Today I missed a call from this number, got to this website and suspected a scam. It turned out that was my friend calling from nearby city where he lives. He called me again from this number.
Scammers use it for cheap rates and anonymity. So, as always, be wary of scammers in any form, but I don't think the actual number is at fault.
I missed the call from 347-562-2648, a guy left a message saying his name was Phillip Edwards and that he was calling from Mutual Referral Services and to give him a call back at 1 866-403-7940. I called back, I could hardly understand him, he said I was approved for a $5,000 dollar loan, but I had to send $1,052 in order to get it. He said that the reason why I would have to send the money is because a bank wouldn't approve me so I had to go through a private lender and that I had to purchase insurance in order to get it, I was like why when I have insurance on my job, I told him it didn't make sense to have all that insurance. He said, "Well the lenders need to know that you will hold your end of the bargain and paying that would ensure them that your intentions about paying the loan back are good.
I told him I didn't have it and I would have to think about it. He said he would get his secretary to send the information via e-mail and that I should get it in an hour, well that was yesterday, September 24, 2008 and I still have not received an e-mail. The funny thing about it is that I did have that kind of money earlier that day, but I decided to pay most of my bills in advance, I CAN'T EXPRESS HOW HAPPY I AM RIGHT NOW ABOUT THAT, because if I still had it in the bank at the time he asked for it, I probably would have fallen for it. At first I said to myself, "Why did I pay my bills in advance," but after waking up this morning and sitting at my desk for a while at work, I decided to look up the number, I DO LIKE TO INVESTIGATE THINGS, and look at all this good information I found. I do know better and I should have known better than to send my information, especially being that every time I go to the bank, I always read that big sign that they have about identifying a scam, and sending money in order to receive a loan is like number 3 on the list in the bank.
I feel bad for all of you who have lost your money, I think its wrong because they are preying on people, some of whom are in desperate situations. And when people are in desperate situations they are more vulnerable to things. It's just wrong in every aspect. I hope they find out who's behind this and make them pay for their actions. Again, I would like to thank everyone who have posted information about this number because it really helped.
I just told them they are a scam, I have a cell number for another one. his name id Aadrian, 1-905-550-3762. This is the number the the 1800 number goes to.
I recieved an E-mail from Mutual Referral Services and a phone call from this number for a loan of $5000.00 and followed trough with my payment for insurance. I feel like a fool. I have contacted the BBB, Secret Service and FBI. They say their address is 701 town center drive in newport news ,VA. I had somebody look into this and there is no such address nor has any other businesses in the building ever heard of them. They give a number of 1-866-403-7940 as a contact but you talk to somebody different even though all the voices are the same. I will get my money back and plan on consulting an attorney. There is other info I cannot discuss but they will be caught! Anybody can respond to this by writing me @ [email protected]
