Got a call from 201-716-4468 today.. Male on other end seemed to be faking tone of his voice asked to speak to "the person who handles security for this website" and when told "how may I help you" he hung up.
Just a head up to everyone. I received a call transferred to me this morning. It was from someone who didn’t identify themselves today telling me the SSL certificate on our website was going to expire. He asked who he would talk to about renewing SSL certificates. I said it would be me and he told me the certificate on our website XXXXXXX.com is going to expire. I told him that was not our website address (although it was close) and our certificates are not going to expire any time soon. He said he would have to double check his references then hung up.
The call showed up on my caller ID from COMODO from 201-716-4468 I searched online and found similar incidents happening to other people at the website below.
Unprofessional call from a fellow asking who looks after our website security. Call display said "New Jersey 201-716-4468". Said he was from Comodo and our certificate was about to expire. He asked if we took credit card information on our website and wanted to upsell to a higher security certificate but he hung up after I told him we don't take credit card info. Seemed very suspicious to me.
Just like the companies that send out information or call you to renew your domains, and they are not your SSL or Registrar. Do not call them. Renew on your own with your current registrar or SSL company before it expires. You can always renew early. I do not and will not ever trust emails or phone calls, even if it is from the provider. Do your own research and initiate the purchase yourself.
