5/19/15 - I have received several calls today from 202-100-1000 with no caller ID. As soon as I answer the phone, I hear a ringtone as if I were dialing a number. Then, I hang up.
I received several calls today from this number. Someone with a British sounding accent said left a message. They said hello a couple of times and then waited for a long time for someone to answer. I could hear several people speaking in the background.
Picked up and it rang through to a busy call center where a women with a very thick accent informed me that she was an official of the U.S. government and wanted to give me a $9,000 refund, but could only do so if I gave her my bank account information.
I asked what department or agency she belonged to, and she stammered for a while before finally claiming she was an agent of the "United States Grant Department." She tried to explain that every year you pay taxes, and then this mysterious "Grant Department" selects people to reward for paying on time.
I informed her it is a felony to impersonate a government agent, and then she started her script all over again. When I cut her off, she told me that the government wanted to bless me, then stammered a little more before hanging up.
Just had thesame call from somebody that was either British or east Indian. They claim the same thing that because of student loans or paying our taxes that we would receive $9000 grant. Said she was from the US Grant department when I asked. She spoke a few more seconds and I said no thank you and hung up.
