Because these calls are almost 99% coming from India is why. We have no jurisdiction there. Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $60.00 or so. All we can do is report at this time and hope they can get on India to stop this.
Report the Calls to the real IRS here:
•report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.
•You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. Add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments in your complaint.
A guy with an Indian accent called and said that he was from the IRS. He said his name was Adam. Played along and asked for a translator and of course there was no translator. Really IRS? Scam :/
Yes I got a call from this number today and they threatened to put me in jail if I didn't pay over 3000 in owed taxes, I was a student during the years that he claimed that I owed taxes and I felt like something wasn't right because I didn't even make any money those years so there was no way I could have owed thousands of dollars in taxes. This was a scary call for me because he told me I would need a lawyer if I didn't settle the case on the phone with him IMMEDIATLY. He told me that it was illegal to hang up on him put him on hold or mute and if I hung up the police would be immediately notified. I was lucky that my bf was by my side and listening on speaker, he looked the number up and saw all of your helpful comments here as I was on the phone with jack Williams who like many of you had experienced also had an Indian or Arabic(?) accent and could barely speak English. Total SCAM! hope my comment here helps someone as much as you have all helped me. Grateful for you all and this wonderful website that protects good citizens who are targeted by immoral money hungry vultures who try to take advantage of the system. Calling the authentic IRS to report him!
This an indian based IRS scam (there are also pakistani based ones). Do not fall for this. read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm
Also report it to your local law enforcement agency. The scammers use magicjack (YMax corporation) voice over IP lines. This is against their terms of use and can lead to termination. However only law enforcement can initiate the contact with Ymax.

We got a call from this number just now. Two foreign accented people talked to us. One of them with a strong South Asian accent, claimed as a superior IRS officer and threatened that he would send a letter to the court house in two hours if we wouldn't pay an outstanding balace of $3,000 for year 2008-2012. We had never owed any money in back tax. I knew it wasn't true, but we are still scared. He also said he had sent a registered mail three times in the past 3 months and all were rejected by us. He said he would take legal action in 2 hours if we don't pay the amount now. We sincelely hope they would be caught soon so no one would be scammed again.
