Never give anyone access to your computer.  Period.  Never give money over the phone or computer, period.  Never give out financial or card number information out over the phone or computer.  Period.  Yeah, a lot of people buy on line but usually with companies with a brick and mortar location.    Otherwise you are taking a bad chance.

Axiom:

If anyone with an Indian accent cold calls you and--- 1.  threatens you or--- 2.  offers you something,--- you know it's a scam and hang up immediately and block the call.

Corollary

Never wire  anyone money if you do not know them personally.

I have received two calls over the last two weeks from a Michele Harvey with an Indian accent and phone-mill noise in the background.  She says that they have been receiving multiple suspicious error messages from my computer and that I need to follow her instructions so that she could help me.  I asked several times for her phone number so that I could call her back telling her that I was not at my computer (in fact I had just turned it on).  The phone number is 202-407-9179 as written in a previous posting.

Have been receiving these calls for months, and about 5 in the last 2 weeks, answered one this morning. A woman (Nancy, heavy Indian accent) said she was from Microsoft and I had downloaded "junk" files that needed to be removed. My computer was not on, so I asked her when did I do this, she could not answer. I asked her what the files would do to my computer, she just repeated that I need to go my computer so she could help (very aggressively) then when I said " will these computers spread a virus and crash my computer" she said 'yes that's what they will do." I told her I was busy and she said I could call her back @ 202-407-9179, then I asked her to name the files, she did not, then I asked her how she got my phone number and she hung up. Came here and read the history listed, I knew it was a scam, Microsoft does not make these types of random calls, thanks everyone for your input.

I received a call Wednesday morning from a person with an Indian accent claiming they were from Windows stating that someone has hacked into my computer and that Windows was going to block my computer forever because what these hackers  are doing is illegal and I no longer have security on my computer.  I did not give the person a chance to offer to do something to correct the situation I just screamed in the phone that THEY ARE A SCAM!!!!!

My niece got the same type of call a few days before me.  Unfortunately she allowed them to access her computer remotely, but when they started asking for a $199.00 fee to correct her situation she hung up on them.  She told me about it and I told her it was a SCAM...............WINDOWS DOES NOT CALL PEOPLE!!!!!!

Javin Cooper asked me to get in front of my computer yesterday so he could help me to protect my email address that had been compromised. Said he's from Microsoft Windows Tech Dept.  Could not ID the email address (I have several). Asked which computer IP address he was concerned about, said I had to to go to my computer and give it to him!  He gave me the call back # so my husband - "who is good with computers" - could deal with it.
I suspect he wanted access to my system to obtain info that could be sold/compromised by him/them.
