I just got a call from these people telling me that I am getting a government grant and to go pick it up at Walmart. But first that want me to call 202 684 6332 for more instructions.
I called this number bacj because they called twice at about 3 am and left a message saying goodnight. i called back that morning and it said the line was disconnected.. ummm yeaa
THEY CALL ME ALL THE TIME THEY SAY that somebody is using my social security number and that i need to call there attorney to help me, i said to the man well if your attorney wants to speak to me he can call me himself..
then they hung up.. scammmmmmm scammmmmm...
These are ALL scam calls of one type or another. Do-not-call lists are totally worthless since crooks don't obey laws by definition, and the fines when (rarely) caught are a tiny cost of doing business. Blocking numbers is also a fools errand since these low-lifes change their number every few days. Maybe you like to block tens of thousands of numbers (?).
The only real solution is to attack the "business" model itself. The robot dialer just dials random numbers looking for a working phone. Some computer dialers can simultaneously dial 100's of numbers per second. If you press 1, then you get connected to the crook. Maybe one in a million is a blue-haired old lady who will sign up for anything. That's GOLD to them!
My idea? Not really mine, but if the phone companies would institute a 5 sec delay before completing any outgoing call this would slow the robo to the point of being impractical. The average legit caller would not notice the delay but it would kill the entire robo model ... scammers, telemarketers, AND political hacks.
