Scammer left a threatening message on our phone just like many others. I wonder if the "employees" mentioned by others know that they are part of the scam.

Things could become even more interesting now that the identity of so many U.S. government employees has been stolen through recent hacks. Imagine: "This is [government agent name] from the IRS, please call me at my direct phone number to discuss your tax return..." You google the agent and find that he/she exists and the only phone number provided is the generic IRS number, through which you know it will take at least 30 minutes to get to a live person who will not give you the extension or direct number for this agent, neither will they confirm or deny whether the number you received is correct.

The inefficiency of bloated but incredibly powerful government agencies such as the IRS makes them inhuman and fearsome, which makes it difficult for U.S. citizens (us) to feel that the agency can address our concerns or to feel positively about the agencies (in addition to feelings about agencies such as the IRS, whose purpose is to take our property/money). These characteristics also make these agencies easier targets for imitation by fraudulent opportunists, which harms citizens belief in humanity and decreases citizens trust in the agencies because we cannot determine who is who.

Me too!
Just called at 9:30 "unknown caller" leaving a message on machine that the IRS was filing a lawsuit. No name mentioned and their are two adults living here...so which one? LOL.
Same return number. There have been scam alerts  in the news recently, so I figured it was one of them,
Thought about returning the call...via my cell phone, which is not-registered with my name, but these poor people are getting paid by someone to do this. I wonder why the gov does nothing about stuff like this...but of course, you can not do anything about people overseas from call centers.
Bless the people that invented caller ID and answering machines and voice mail. Thank you!

Same message info. Got to have some fun...so I called back. No offense to people of Indian or same close decent, but his English is a 2nd language. When I asked what name he was calling for, he put me on hold and then came back with the same speech. When he said the police were coming...I said "good" as my husband was a policeman...and then I did a dance on his brain telling him that I knew this was a scam and that their information was all over the net as a scammers. He hung up on me.. See ya and bye-bye!!

I did call back because they kept calling.  My mistake as I should know better than return a "unidentified number.".  They said they were the IRS.  They then said they audited my wife's 2007-2012 taxes and found she was short $3928 due to a miscalculation on her W2.  They knew her name and where she lived before she lived with me. I made the mistake of correcting the address with my current address.  They said the IRS wanted to know if I want to pay the amount owed or they would file a lawsuit.  The big tip off was the "manager" I was transfered to had a thick Indian accent but said his name was Bob Jackson.  I confirmed it was a scam when I asked if the taxes said I and/or my wife owned our house or rented.  50/50 chance but he was were wrong.  The IRS or anyone who actually audited our taxes would not be wrong.  I think they pay for all the information a site like white pages can give you then call.  It is quite a scam.  I typed the number in Google just to be sure I did not just hang up on the real IRS.  Thank you for this site which confirms to me this is a scam.  Sounds like a organization promoting terror in American citizens.  I would therefore call them terrorists.  The CIA (since they are likely overseas) should put the fear of the US in these guys for using the name of the IRS in vain.
