Please be aware that the American Cancer Society is also not the best place to have your money do the most good. They spend 29 or 30 cents out of every dollar you donate on "administrative costs," meaning silk suits for fat cat administrators, shiny trifolds and flyers getting for money, expensive ads, and so on. They don't help anyone with prevention. They don't even do much to help those already diagnosed. They never helped anyone in my family with cancer. Susan Komen, on the other hand, squeezes every penny until it squeaks. Give your donation to them, instead. And please, do your own research before you waste money on the wrong agency. There are websites online that review and rate these organizations, along with the reasons for their ratings. Be an informed consumer.
Called this evening and asked for me by first name. When I said "This is she", the female caller hung up. Though registered as a 501c charitable org, it also goes by other names (red flag), and I think this company is keeping more for itself than it raises. HelpForVets is run by the same person, which similarly keeps more for itself.
Oops, sorry about the above entry!! I received a call from 1-234-203-7939 identified as "BreastCancerOf". They said they wanted to speak to Robert and if I were he. I said yes, and they started their pitch. Part way through the pitch I asked that they hold on, BUT they did not! This is an indication that they are using an automated system to solicit. Pretty cheap of them to beg for money using a robo to get into your home/wallet. The bottom feeders are getting more sophisticated, so beware. I don't know if they are scammers, but I do know I won't give to nameless, faceless voices over the phone. If I am called again by this number, I will block them.
Called this morning; ID was "BreastCancerOf" as reported by others. It is a loophole in the law that allows charities to call you and these guys take advantage of that. My personal rule is to never respond to telephone solicitation of any kind without regard to how legitimate they may actually be. Block 'em Danno.
