It's a scam that goes by such names as MoreStar Consultancy, LLC; Litigation Consulting Service, LLC; Claims & Warrants; and North American Asset Investigation Bureau, LLC (NAAIB). For details, read consumer credit advocate Bud Hibbs' report on these scammers: http://budhibbs.com/debtcollectorpages/NAAIB.htm
One thing it remember is that anytime someone calls you demanding money to prevent your arrest or criminal charges, it is ALWAYS a scam. No debt collector (let alone criminals posing as debt collectors) have the authority to have anyone arrested for anything. (And it's illegal to them to threaten such a thing.) These type of crooks also routinely impersonate FBI agents, police and other law enforcement officials, which, obviously, is illegal as well. (Besides, law enforcement officers aren't in the business of debt collection, and debt is a civil, not a criminal, matter.)
The bottom line is, these are criminals trying to steal your money. Ignore their illegal threats and report their attempts to extort money from you to all these federal and state law enforcement agencies:
1) The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
2) Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone and give them all the details.
3) Maryland Attorney General http://www.oag.state.md.us/Consumer/complaint.htm (Litigation Consulting claims to be in Maryland)
4) Your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.naag.org
5) File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone. Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
6) File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these criminals call back, tell them that they aren't getting any money from you and that you've reported their scam to federal and state law enforcement. They will react with the usual moronic, false threats. If possible, try to save any voice messages they leave and, if legal in your state, record their calls if you speak with them. (Inexpensive phone recorders are available at Radio Shack-type stores.)
I recieved a call today from 240-696-8261 saying they were from an agency and I was about to get sued in the civil court. I didn't give them any information because of this site. Not sure what to do. Thanks
I recieved a call today from them for someone who doesn't live here. The wierd thing is that they called my cell phone as well as my home phone. When I called back and wasn't able to talk to anyone I got suspicious, besides, it is a holiday today, what government agency is open! A "Joseph Ferguson" left the message. Said I was being sued in a civil court. Thanks for the heads up!
To the guy who has nothing better to do than bash other people, I believe his name is John, Get a [***] life. I had the same phone call at my home today. Too bad the [***] have the wrong home. The bottom line is that I am reporting them to the FTC. What is especially interesting is that they make their number unlisted, because they know what they are doing is highly illegal. I have blocked their number with my phone company and I suggest everyone else do the same.
A woman claiming to be a special investigator called looking for my ex who does not live here and never has. I took the message for him, called him and decided to check it out. I was suspicious and rightly so. There has been a family member missing for years and we thought it might be some information on him. Has anyone noticed there is a recession in the midst? Some bills just have to wait. I don't like liars and scammers and refuse to deal with either. By the way, to John -- deadbeat is one word. Life is difficult enough without people like you. Are you overcompensating for something?
So, I got a call at 5AM this morning from these scam artists. They not only woke me and my family up, but they called the WRONG NUMBER!!!! Wow, i always knew that the people that work for debt collectors only worked there because they aren't smart enough or talented enough to get a real job....but WOW. That's a special kind of lame to call the wrong number at THAT time of the morning. I guess they are too stupid to know that there are DIFFERENT time zones.
Also, warning to people that actually owe money for an old debt...there is a time limit, a statute of limitations. With an older debt, any debt collector that threatens to take you to court is breaking the law. Check out the details for your state. If you pay them a dime the clock may start over, so check out the law!!!
