What a LIAR!!! Wage garnishment is done by court order. Phone calls are not an official notification of debt either. Please read Elspeth'so excellent comment and give your state attorney general a call. Also show this thread to your employer. You know the caller is a liar so read up on your rights.
Called my work and left a message with someone saying it was about a "Friday Morning Event." I checked here and a few other places and found the same person, Thomas Moore had called and made some kind of threat of small lawsuit. I found a voicemail on my phone when I went outside where he called my phone and left a message making the same threat. The company is MWS and although they claim to be a lawfirm they are just a debt collector. They didn't even say who their client was. This reaks of scam. They say I'm going to be served on Friday. I'll see how THAT goes. I've been threatened like this before and I've never had that happen. Everytime I talk to these kinds of people they cannot back up the crap they're trying to say I owe. I'll let everyone know if they decide to actually do something.
Just checked my credit report and there's nothing that these people would be handling on there. That won't stop them from calling all the time and threatening me.
This may be another company named MWS that's a creditor but it's worth a read.

I had taken out an online loan several months ago with a company that i found out today with no notice either via email or by a letter in the mail that my delinquent account was now under MWS Financial and upon answering the phone-the guy thomas moore told me he was notifying me of some sort of Friday morning event where an affidavit was going to be filed against me for being delinquent on the loan. I understand i owe the loan but i can't afford to pay right now. Is this legal for them to threaten about sending me to the DA or to be arrested? Moore said if i don't call them tomorrow to pay at least 431 on part of the loan the affidavit will be filed in my county where i live and from there who knows. The problem is while i do want to get the loan wiped out i am almost afraid to bother giving them any banking/cc info b/c i am not sure how legit they are. They are accusing me of hot check writing. This is a an online loan so they got the deductions from my checking account if i had the money to give them. The phone# were 218-617-7549 and upon doing more research i found they are connected to 866-330-8463. A friend of mine told they are doing scare tactics and that there is no way they can work with law enforcement as her ex-husband is a cop. Though this is Texas so i don't know. Any advice?
Debt is civil, not criminal, so your caller is blowing smoke. The DA is not in the business of debt collection, so that is yet another illegal threat. Scammers also love to play the "hot check" card - it's a way to intimidate you into paying them without making them comply with federal law. I've included a couple of links you can check to see if you do, indeed, owe for a "hot check" - although in most cases, your bank would have contacted you, along with the vendor you wrote the check to - so that you could put it right.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

Also read up on the laws and your rights:
Received a collection call, but did not answer. I don't have any debts owed to this agency and have never gotten a payday loan. In the past, I have received several calls from different agencies trying to find a Melissa or Melanie Jones (no relation to me) who apparently owes debts to various creditors and somehow these calls are relayed to me. My lawyer had to step in on one of them, and yet the harassment continues. I've turned them and others over to the state attorney general's office, and continue to keep a log of times they call and nature of their business. As a courtesy, I have notified all of these creditors that I am not the person they are seeking, and would appreciate it if they'd stop harassing me, but that doesn't seem to stop them.
