See my notes just above yours. It wasn't a scam in my case, but the person at the collections agency lied at first and then grudgingly gave me some of the information I needed, alongside misinformation. Good luck.

I'm on the phone with them now. I've never owned a car in Illinois and as far as I can tell they just call everyone with the same name as whoever they are looking for in hopes of finding the right person. It isn't a scam, but the scattershot approach they use probably means the wrong person has paid at least a few times in the past.

You are right. They start with the info you filed when you registered your car in IL. If that doesn't work, they start to track you down using your name around IL and then the rest of the country. For those who don't owe the money, you just have to tell them that it's not you and they will stop bothering you. Eventually, if they can't track down the person, or they do and the person refuses to pay, they will report it to the 3 credit reporting bureaus. If you have nothing to pay, you have nothing to worry about. Otherwise, I found it easiest to go to the organization where I originally owed the money--I ended up paying $4 instead of more than $100! You can see my experience under "EB" on this site.

This is a debt collection agency. If they can't reach you through the information provided by the organization for which you originally owe the debt (in my case the IL tollway), they try to find you using other searches...many of which lead to the wrong person. For those who don't owe the debt they are trying to collect, you just have to tell them that it's not you and they will stop bothering you. You can see my experience under "EB" on page 2 of this list of comments--I reported everything extremely thoroughly. Good luck.

My 89 yo Grandfather recieves scam and phishing calls all the time. A different number, 866-659-4104, has come up twice and they called again today. I spoke to a woman, from the same Illinoise law firm that uses the number 312-348-1553, who said my Grandfather's car ran the toll in Illinoise, which he has never ever been to. I asked for the tag number and she said all she could tell me was that it was an Ill. tag. Errr, umm we don't live anywhere near Ill. and I can assure you there is no vehicle that he registered in Ill. I laughed and told her she should check to see what state she is calling and to do her research and stop making random phishing calls. Funny she chose a retired WW2 vet and lawyer to try to scam. Morons! I am reporting this number to the actual Toll Authority in Ill. She hung up when I asked HER what info she had to confirm that it was my Grandfather.
