This is a legit call/phone # -- it is from the social security office. They called me and I did not answer it. They followed up with an email and then I called them after I got the email.
First I am not a scammer. Second, I always google numbers I can't identify before I return any calls or even listen to any voicemails. Often googling numbers is not helpful but this time it is and I am so appreciative of everyone's comments about this number, even though I am now very confused because comments are either pretty sure it's a scam, or pretty sure it's legit.
My experience: I received a voicemail with a person who identified herself, and that she was from the SSA in Chicago. She was calling me about my recent application to begin to receive SS payments, and because I applied a few months after I turned 66 I was entitled to back payments. She is correct, I did just apply,, and I did apply a few months after I turned 66. The number she gave to return her call was the same number that called me with the exception of the last two digits. She also explained that after 1:00 that day she would be leaving the office until 7/11, and instructed me not to leave a message because she would be gone, but to press zero so I could speak to someone else who could help me. She also said that I would be receiving an email from them and a letter in the mail. I did receive a letter in the mail, and an email from SSA, which was sent to the email address that I gave them on my application. I have three email addresses, and they sent it to the one I gave them.
Given this information it feels legit to me. With caution I will be calling the number she gave me next Tuesday, If she asks me for my SS# we're done. I'm not writing this to let you know this number is legit, because I really don't know if it is. I'm just writing to add to the comments so far in case it's helpful. Also I would love any insights one might have on how this still could be a scam. The only way I could see it being a scam is that the on-line SSA application process website is a fake because I don't know otherwise how they could have received my phone number, and the correct email address, etc. Any comments? I'm all ears. Thanks
