FAKE IRS SCAM.
Received a recording from this number, saying they were the IRS and they were filing suit, and to call back. I called back from a different number, and an Indian woman answered "Hello, IRS." She then asked what number they had called. She seemed to know that the number I had called from was not in their system. It's as if she was trying to match up the number that they had originally called in order to further their scam.
I believe that this is part of the same scam run by the "card services" people. In the last two weeks, all of the card services telephone reps have been Indian.
Got a call from this number earlier today didn't answer it as I was at work. Got another call later that after noon (202-864-1791) this time I answered. Woman with Indian accent, but decent grasp of the English language; I gave semi-answers ("Yes, "No", "I see") she said was from the IRS and they had found I'd over $4,000 in underpaid taxes. (Incredible considering I use standard deductions, file short-form, and have no taxable assets.) I was going to be subject to fees, jail time, and the losss of my driver's license (?!.) I played along for the most part but eventually just hung-up. Noises in the background that sounded like a TV, children playing/other people talking. Hardly sounded like a government agency call center. I suspect if I had gone on to speak with the "supervisor" they would have tried to get banking information from me in order to collect the money I owed.
The IRS, as stated up thread, does not communicate or operate like this.
Received call from same number from Washington. A recorded voicemail with a woman's voice stating the IRS was filing a law suit was left. June 17, 2015 seems to be the date all the bogus calls were received. If the IRS were filling a lawsuit against any citizen, a letter would have been sent certified and regular USPS mail. Also, they will try to reconcile and/or try to avoid any legalities until they have exhausted all possibilities to collect any monies. This seems to be a federal crime so the type of action is to report to the IRS.
