This is a scam claiming Federal Grant Money is available to you. I  reported it to the Federal Trade Commission this morning. The scammer called and said my cell phone and said I had been selected to receive federal grant money (with some claims that it was because I always pay my taxes, I fit into a certain demographic group that will receive these loans...) He confirmed my name, phone # and address, and age (which is 59), and asked whether I would prefer having the money 1) deposited into my bank account 2) put on one of my major credit cards or 3) cash delivered by hand Western Union. He gave me a phone # to call to confirm my acceptance of the grant, and a confirmation code JB140.

I also was contacted by someone but it came up as unknown on my ID. I answered it and listened offering me the Federal Grant for all of the same reasons as above. They then gave me the 360-335-3091 number to confirm and to walk me through the process of receiving the money by Western Union.

I got a call from a person identifying himself as chris Garcia at extension 5240. He gave me a confirmation code and this number which I was to write down and then call to get further instructions from his manager. The number he actually called from was 512-453-9341, which caller id identified as being in Austin, Texas. He said he was calling from Washington DC.  He kept asking leading questions all of which appeared designed to elicit a yes.  When I responded with "that's correct" or something else he would continue with another attempt.

I asked him repeatedly which department or agency of the federal government he was with, and after several evasions he finally said "health and human services."  When I told him I would not give out bank account or credit card information over the phone, have never heard of the US government using Western Union but would be happy to receive a check in the mail, he asked if I would like him to close the file. I told him he should do whatever he decides to do and hung up.
