Answered phone, and after a long delay (revealing the call was placed by a predictive dialer), a super-friendly sounding voice-recognition robo-call ensued. The guy that recorded the automation uses a nice, amicable, slightly hesitant tone that is designed to fool people into thinking they are talking to a live person. It went like this:
ROBOT: Hi, this is Robert with customer assistance - how are you today?
ME: Pancakes.
ROBOT: The reason I called is we are helping people reduce their mortgage debt. [or something like that] Would you be interested in some assistance?
ME: La dee da dee da
ROBOT hangs up
Obviously the automation is programed to ignore answers to question #1, but if it does not recognize a "yes" to question #2, hangs up immediately. This is rather awesome; they have programed a *robot* to be rude to you if you don't bite on their scam! Saves them a ton of money they would otherwise have to pay to a human to be rude to you.
It's clear that if you aren't a sucker, they don't want you to waste one more second of their robot's precious time. Clearly, their robot's time is important - but yours is not.
