You are wrong.
The Do Not Call registry stops thousands of law-abiding businesses from calling you. You just can't *count* calls you *don't* get.
Expecting the Do Not Call law to stop criminals from calling is like expecting a "No Trespassing" sign to prevent burglaries.
Many telemarketing and scam calls originate form overseas, beyond the jurisdiction of U.S. laws.
And finally, one benefit of the Do Not Call Registry, even when it's violated, is that you no longer need to wonder if the call you get is legitimate: If they're calling, they're criminal.
Thank you for the cite. I will second the statement that the only thing that the FTC does is pocket your tax money and use it for eating donuts. Their existence is a total waste.
Writing Congress is also a waste, so I will try the FCC.
Received a call from 402-982-0721, which comes up as the Call Center, NE. They hung up when the machine answered. I get bogus calls like this on my cell phone too.
Just got a call this morning from this number. Instantly suspected it to be a fraud. Automated female voice offered to lower my rate to 6.9% and to push 1 or 2. I pushed 1 I think and spoke to someone to see what they were up to. Heavy accent male said something about the opportunity to lower my credit card rate because they are rewarding me for paying last 6 months. I asked him what card he was calling about, figuring if it was somewhat legit he could provide me with such and such card with such and such bank, and maybe some numbers or something. He said your Visa and Mastercard. That made no sense and I grew more suspicious. I asked him what company he was with, and he said Visa and Mastercard Service. He said we work with over 300 credit card companies like Bank of America, Capitol One, etc., and reward people for paying last 6 months and that have at least $3,500 on all cards. Still made no sense, as a real offer would come from one of my credit card companies specifically. I could tell this was going to take me down a path where they probably would be fishing for my information, and I wasn't going to give it. I told him I was not interested and hung up. No returned calls yet. Someday I'll learn just not to pick up the phone when I don't recognize the number or expect a call.
