Called/contacted me for the first time today. For a cell phone bill from 1997 from a company i have never heard of. After they repeatedly told me I owed this debt I Nicely told them they were out of their minds explaining I got my first cell phone in 2000. Gave them the three companies I have been with to date. She admitted this is the first time they contacted me since...1997!
They wanted me to send them all sorts of information and I laughed at her. Its never shown on my credit and I told her as far as I am concerned they are scammers... of course she got nasty after that and hung up

21 Dec 2010I made it a habit to keep copies of old credit reports...they would come in handy with something like this...especially once it's over 7 years. That's when you write them a nice little letter telling them the statutes of limitations have run out and you send them proof with it....they have to stop. Look up sample ceast & desist letters and mail or fax them. If they keep on, file a lawsuit. Good luck everyone. I currently have a case against them with an attorney. They have filed suit against Portfolio Recovery Services. They are breaking rules and guidelines left and right. They call before 6am on the weekends and after 9pm on weekdays. 16 Nov 2010These people keep calling me to collect a credit card we paid off over 8 years ago. They call and I tell them the same thing each time. I have sent cancelled checks, the payoff letter and all and they keep calling. They need to find something else to do because I am not paying it again.And they keep asking for my husband. 16 Nov 2010They are bottom feeders that buy OLD debts, most often paid off or written off by the original lenders. They make thier money off of people not knowing the law because 99.99% of the time the debt is past its staute of limitations.
Make sure you check what those limits are as they vary state by state.
Also note, if you pay them even a penny, that statute of limitation is null and void and the debt becomes good again!! hence DO NOT PAY THENM ONE RED CENT!!!
I am in the process of finding out how I can stop them from calling, but at this time all I can say is that the debts they say you have have been written off already, if not paid off!!!Reply ! leslie replies to rfv

Portfolio recovery buys off old loans and credit card bills that have either been charged-off or closed out. Its kinda a scam because now both loans show up on your credit reports. I disputed older loans on my credit reports and got most of them taken off. Companies you dispute on your credit report have 30 days to give proof to Credit bureaus that the loan is still relevant or it comes off. I have been able to remove quite a few old credit debt this way.
