I had a man call this morning by the name of Ben Williams from 415-376-1480 and said he was going to have the police come to my home and arrest me for a loan that I have never had, I asked him for his info and he hung up on me, I called my Police Department and asked them if any arrest warrant was given out on me and they put me on hold, they checked on it came back negative, I asked them about LA County where he said he was out of and they told me not likely, because they would have to go through my PD first. They said this was was a scam artist and I should report this to the FBI. Also what I found funny is that this man had a strong Arab accent and his name was Ben Williams.
My daughter called me about a call from 415-376-1481 on a debt she didn't know anything about. They advised someone may have stolen her SSN and she needed to call Michael Carter the Attorney they worked for. Well she called me, I am an attorney and have been practicing law for 30+ years. I checked the California Bar web site and no attorney matched the name with the information given by the caller. There are 6 Michael Carter's in California; 2 are inactive, 1 is a Judge, 1 works for the Federal District Court, 1 is an out of state in house counsel who doesn't actively practice and 2 are active. Neither active attorney's have telephone numbers that match the number above.
It is my opinion that this is a scam. If someone calls you saying they are an attorney ask for their bar number, what state they practice out of and check the information with the State Bar Association on line. It's very easy to do and you can verify information very quickly. In most, if not all, States it is a violation of the Code of Ethics to threaten to arrest someone or take any type of criminal action to collect a debt. Any attorney who does this puts his license and reputation at risk. Both are too hard to come by to put them at risk.
i to recieved a call from a man stating i owed a debt and needed to call now! when i did he said he never heard of me.... strange when i told him i was ganna report him he now will not speak to me..
Some of these scammers will also try to get you to sign a document indicating that you will pay a certain amount each month, and that you will never dispute the bill or the amount owed. DON'T DO IT! As the post says, this is a scam to try to intimidate you into forking over money that you most probably don't owe. Notify your friends, family, and perhaps your employer if the calls are going to them as well. They are known to contact your employer and tell them what a deadbeat your are. Again, this is totally a scam.
