I just got a call from this number telling me it's "Adam Jones", the "Head Attorney" in a lawsuit filed against my social security number. They're "Sebastian's Law Firm". Yeah.
Of course, when I asked, please spell that name, give me an address, tell me exactly where you are, I was told I'm a "dumb lady" demanding that information, and - THEY hung up on ME.
I received a message from this number yesterday & he said that if I or my lawyer don't call him back there is nothing he can do for me & good luck with my life. So when I called back I couldn't understand him with his Indian accent & he hung up on him so I called back & said I am trying to find out what you want & he hung up on me again. Then the 3rd time he put me on hold & the disconnected me. I came in to work this morning & was told they left a message here last night. Where do these people get off. What should I do now to protect myself & stop this harassment?
This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:
This person called with a very thick accent, but had an American name, was very rude and threatened to have the police come and arrest me because I am being sued. When I asked him what was I being sued for, he never gave me an answer. The genius has no idea that I am a member of the police dpeartment and would have known if there was an mpending arrest warrant out for me.
