SCAM ! - Man with Indian accent said he was from "Windows" (!) and have a report that there is something wrong with my computer. I replied, "yes there is!! Can you please fix it for me? ". I was about to leave the receiver by my television for as long as it took for him to hang up. But I guess he was on to me, because he said something angrily in Indian, then hung up.
A capitalist solution is the people band together and make a new phone system. All our calls are already made using the internet on one leg or another so they are just as good as using VoIP. Why even keep the unreliable phone numbering system? Start calling people using numbers like 435 at brand x VoIP or 1234 on yachoo.voip. Just like using country codes or area codes or exchanges. The most phone companies give is call block for 900 area codes. Competing VoIP services could enable blocking of whole VoIP domains that refuse to enforce decent privately drafted regulations. "No I don't take calls on my VoIP magic jack converter that come from wild chuck's scandalous webcam colony! Get an acct with a legitimate VoIP provider if you want to call me." I mean companies use email nowadays and some have chat options and even voice chat. So you wouldn't even need a regular phone number except for rare people who still can only be reached that way.
Brilliant. Best if you get some windows installed on a year that coincides with a release. I'm going to use that in pitches for a house I'm selling that got new windows in 95!
