I recieved a call from this number today, too. It was a woman this time. She also was saying that I had malware and a virus on my computer and that this was a free service. I asked her if she was from Microsoft and she said, "Yes,... no". She asked me to hold down the Windows tab on my keyboard while at the same time using the R button. I knew it would bring up my Run box, but pretended to go along with her. She said to type in inf virus and enter that. I said that she could talk to my tech support and would give her their number. She said no, that they would charge me and hers was a free service. She was very insistent that I do this so I asked her to call me back in 15 minutes while I made the decision. The second time she called from a different New York number that showed up on my call waiting caller id while I was on the phone to my tech support who said that she was very glad that I reported it and that they would look into the matter themselves. Reputable technitical support representatives do not like others like her to taint their profession and will pursue the matter because of that reason.
Yes, as you all above are saying, when I called her number back it also had a recording saying it was out of service.
The first, original call that came through to me showed up as: 99902213226783. The second time was the 516-746-9209 number. The third that came through while I was talking with my tech support is 607-324-9764.
Be careful out there.
