Got same msg as above. Looked up number (559)444-2044. It is actually listed as the number for the IRS office in Fresno. You would think our government would be concerned enough to go after them. No...wait a minute, I forgot, they are too busy going after conservative non-profit groups!!!

WARNING
The above number is legitimately an IRS number.  However, the caller is NOT!  I got two calls.  One from a man (who was sooooo easy to jerk around).  I never gave him a chance to tell me what he wanted.  That alerted me when the second call came in 3 hours later.  This time it was woman.  She identified herself as Officer Green, and that was as far as she got.  I really hate the kind of language I used with her.  But she wouldn't shut up.  She comes on very strong and can be intimidating if you aren't expecting it.  These people are targeting senior citizens.  Alert your friends, parents, coworkers, etc.  They just targeted a woman who then disappeared for more than 9 hours while they ran her all over town and stole $5000.  They will demand money in the form of those Green Dot cards.  I was thinking of sending them a used Starbucks card.  I decided to call the newspaper.  More coverage.  More warnings.

Whet you see on your CallerID can be spoofed.
Apparently, in this case,  the bad guys are spoofing a REAL IRS phone number!

There is a widespread IRS (or CRA) or "tax scam" being  practiced by scammers on both USA and Canadian residents.

USA tax payers should read this:
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/Phone-Scams-C ... 5-Filing-Season

Canadian tax payers should read this:
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/nwsrm/lrts/2013/l131210-eng.html

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

Educational post:
This scam is also described as scam #11, here:

If you were contacted by an IRS impostor, you may file a report, after clicking on this link:

You should go down to the station and make a formal report if you can.  As a practical mater there is little law enforcement can do because the callers are located in India or Pakistan.  They can, however, if they receive enough complaints, go the media and warn the community.
