Great answer! Yep, its a very OLD tactic that scumbag collection companies use. the debt is NO longer valid. they buy them for pennies, use volume/auto dialers to reach as many people as possible. NEVER answer the phone, and if you do, hang up once they identify themselves. IF debt is old you owe nothing!
Do NOT communicate with these people in any manner! DON'T ask for validation of debt! This gives them a chance to lie and to mess with you. Never ever talk with nor write to nor even THINK about these a-holes! If a process server shows up at your door with a notice to appear in court, THEN you begin trying to validate the debt, but only through third parties, such as a lawyer -- never, ever with these nutjobs directly. It is highly doubtful that they will ever sue, because their modus operandi is to simply harass people. If they really wanted the $48,000 that they claim I owe them (give that a big LOL!!), they would have sued long ago. These are some stupid people, but they're not stupid enough to bring their claims to court.
The point is, DO NOT COMMUNICATE WITH THEM IN ANY WAY! No arguing; no requests for verification of debt; no phone tricks to make your friends laugh at how you handled an annoying call; nothing. Block them; report their calls to the FCC or the FTC; then forget about it and get on with your life. Do not give these people one bit of your time or concern. They're not worth it.

Portfolio Recovery Associates is an outfit that has used several #'s to contact my cell in order to collect an old utility bill for which my ex-husband was responsible. Called me today. The first time they called several years ago, I was stupid enough to pick it up; they gave me the song and dance about how the terms of my divorce decree didn't matter & it wasn't their problem who was responsible, blah blah. I told them "It's gonna matter if you attempt to sue me, so just try it, dumbass." I hung up. Ever since, I've blocked each # they try to use. Rae D is right; they use these #'s with full knowledge they're not legally entitled to collect most of the debts they're going after. It's just how they roll.
Portfolio Recovery, Debt collector, they have called me from many different numbers from many different area codes obviously different states so WATCH OUT !
Portfolio trash debt collectors. I can't believe this company is still allowed to be in business. They are evil and anyone who works for them is slime.
