They are counting on the victim's ignorance on how the legal system works. You would be surprised to find out how many people actually believe you can be arrested for being in ordinary civil debt.
Or that debt collectors have influence on public prosecutors.
Many people believe, apparently that the IRS can order local police to carry out tax policy, or that you can be arrested for errors on your taxes.
Many people simply believe whatever some cold calling scammer tells them.
General ignorance of the basics of the legal system and US tax system, work to the benefit of scammers.
Got a call about a court case but when I pressed the guy about me never being there or having any liens from that area he told me to wait for the authorities and hung up on me. Number is now on call block.
let call go to answering machine - Adam, caller, from Buena Park, CA asked for me by my name and said that he is from the IRS and that I needed to call him back regarding my files. I did not call back because in the past, I have received a call or two regarding IRS and my case and I know for a fact that IRS communicate via the US mail system.
Scared tteh heck out of me until I talked to my IT guy who googled the number and said it was a scam. I pressed teh guy to learn what account etc this was about, and he would not give me any inforamtion. have never been served with any papers so I know it is a scam. Thank you
