I spoke with them today and it is FedLoan Servicing. My original loan was through a financial institution but last year all student loans are now funded through the Department of Education (FedLoan Servicing). I put in my account # and they were just calling to let me know my 2011 tax information was ready. They were really nice and it was a simple call. They didn't request a SS# or anything. Nothing bad.
BTW - ignoring the calls won't make them go away. As someone said earlier, they have plenty of ways to look up your information and if you really don't have any student loans through this company they can and will take your # and put it in their system as a wrong #. I just had to do this a couple of days ago when a company was calling for the woman who had my phone # before me. I only had to give them my phone # and I haven't heard from them since. Sometimes it just happens....
Yes, Fed Loan Servicing is a legitimate agency. Many of my student loans are now serviced by them. So why can't they be bothered to leave a message? That's why people get negative impressions - if the person calling can't take the time to explain why they're calling, it makes me awfully suspicious of their motives. An earlier poster claimed that they also send letters first and call as a last resort. I received a call today and have never received a letter, AND my student loans are up to date. There are people on both sides of this issue who are wrong.
