I believe you are mistaken because when I recieved a call from them I did not answer. I did however, call the number back and the person that answered the phone knew exactly what # I was calling from. It may mean however that the name that goes with the # is wrong and if they do not know then believe me they will keep calling you.

Not true. Debt collectors must ask for varifying information--information that is not limited to the social, but includes it. Not because they want to steal your identity, but because they must identify who you are to make sure they have the right account holder. If you don't trust the person calling you, ask for their company name, their name and anything else associated with the debt they are trying to collect. For instance if you attended a state college and owe them money, call that school to find out who they sold your debt to. If it isn't who you were called from, then call the place you were referred to and find out if THEY sold your debt to another debt collecting agency. Your debt is sold to the highest bidder and someone else assumes your debt until you pay for it. So don't be rigid and assume the person on the other end of the phone is always lying. Do your research and make sure it isn't your debt before you assume they are doing something untrustworthy. It can also be a mistake, doesn't make the collecting agency on the other end of the phone a liar or a scam artist.

Well if they're not affiliated with direct loans, they need to be reported.  They've sent me contact emails as well as called me for student loan payments on loans which were taken out more than 13 years ago.  If they're bogus, I'll know about it soon, because tomorrow I'm calling Direct Loans (Department of Education) to find out about this nonsense.  I do have outstanding loans, but because of in-school deferrment and post-grad grace period, they never should have entered repayment, yet I found 6 month reports of arrears on my credit report, and these are the people who started contacting me following that.  I'm going to get to the bottom of it and request they stop all telephone contact, as well.  In the age of electronic media, they should be intelligent enough to use email for what it was intended for.
