I never got a letter and though I have loans they are being auto deducted monthly per my payment agreement. I am current, so WHY are you calling? Perhaps you should aquire a loan and become educated yourself.
You guys are being ridiculous. This is a legitimate company. Yes, their phone demeanor is HORRID but come on that's what happens with government companies that get their funding cut constantly. However you're prefectly okay to say "hey, I don't give out my social security number over the phone for security purposes, can you send this inquiry in writing or is there a website I can look up to see what you guys want to talk about?" and most of the time companies like this are alright with their response.

I'm a student but I went off school because I couldn't afford it anymore. My issue with them is that I get 1 letter saying "You're late on your bill" and the other says "In 3 months you'll need to pay your bill" so the company seems to be confused. I consolidated my loans and all of them got shoved there. However I just don't have the money to pay them. I literally am just starting a part-time photography job on Monday. This is the first real income I'll have that isn't freelance. Maybe in a few months I can do like $100 a month but I can't do $400.
Yes, they make mistakes and call the wrong number but you can rectify that by letting them know that the person they call or send letters to doesn't live there or saying "hey, you've got the wrong number." ALOT of people dodge their bills so you can understand why they might call alot to make sure it's really not who they want.
Just a heads this is actually illegal. I worked for a debt collector in college and we were not allowed to call more than once a day. If they're mismanaging your account and calling you multiple times an hour than you should report the person who keeps calling. Just letting it happen won't make it stop though, unless you get a new number.
Do you have kids who went to college and they might have put your name on their loans as references? My parents got called DAILY for a solid like 2 years when I was dodging them. It didn't stop until I sorted the mess out.
Also to anyone else if you are a persons reference for a college loan they're going to call you to ask you how to get in contact with your friend\child\former boyfriend or whoever and they're going to call alot.
