dang it! I'm in the same boat. boyfriend is in Afghanistan too and I didn't pick up thinking it was the wrong number or solicitor.. Glad to see all of these posts. But you probably won't read this unless you do the same thing.
Careful all of you who have deployed loved ones. Their call can come from various places. My son in Afghanistan called from this number. I understand it's from a mobile phone that they hook up via satelite. I also received a local call one time and didn't know it was him. Fortunately I answered it. He said at their base over there in Kyrgyzstan the operator asked for the closest military base to where he was calling and they rounted it through there. The base is local here, within our area code.
My hubby works for the DOD Communications squadron for the USAF. It is actually a call from a satellite phone that the military uses for those serving our country overseas. It is routed through Hawaii, which is why it comes across with that number. My hubby called me from one of those phones at work and I didn't know it was him testing the phone, so I googled it. Then he called back a few minutes later with the same number and I told him that I know you aren't in Hawaii. That is when he told me he was testing the connection of the sat phone. :-)
There is a global Satelite Phone service that the military uses. That service is based out of Hawaii. I believe 808-653-9999 is actually an Iridium satellite phone using that Hawaiian link.
