Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

Well, " Nancy" just called my girlfriend and had her panicking at work. Once she asked for paperwork regarding the issue she was told that there wasn't any that could be provided and was hung up on. By the time I was put on 3 way with "Nancy" she had clearly had, she yelled into the phone that their conversations were being recorded, and proceeded to hang up. There were red flags throughout the 10 seconds I heard her on the phone. I think I'm going to prank call them back and extort money from them. Sounds like a Monday fun day!

Apprently if you ignore the calls from Robert Baxtrom, Walter Harrington calls you. They are scams. I'm so tired of this [***]. For a while I was getting these bogus calls to the tune of 3 a day. Now I seem to be down to one a day or every other day. I have reported these numbers, bogus names, etc to the FBI, FTC, BBB, State Atty General and my local authorities. I will not engage with these people, because they are not worth my time. I refuse to change my cell phone number because I have had this number for 18 years. If I do engage them all I do is say, do what you need to do, and they stop calling, only to be picked up again by someone else. It's frustrating that these types of things are allowed to happen. It's horrible. I add the numbers to my cell phone as a rejected number, but they can still leave a message, which is [***].

I have recieved numerous calls from Litigations Support Services out of Memphis, TN, representing Walter Harrington.   They have called not only from the phone number on this site but also from (901) 444-3524, (901) 407-2022. Ther is NO Walter Harrington listed in the Tennessee Bar working with this company.  They said I had an unpaid Payday Loan and owed over $2500.00 or a Federal warrant would be issued. She asked if I was still in the military because they would contact my Commanding Officer. I asked the woman (who would not disclose her name) how much the original loan supposedly was and she told me that she didn't know and it was not relevant to the case. I laughed and told her to go ahead with her "warrant".  When I notified her that I use to be an executive for a credit card company in the debt collections department so I'm aware of the ACTUAL laws, she hung up on me.  Just for fun I kept calling them back and asking them legal questions and they kept telling me to stop calling them and hanging up.

If anyone would like to mess with these people, rotate calling the 3 numbers above.  You get a different woman each time and they get really belligerent.
